We answer the phone

Found an animal in trouble?

Call first. Do not wait to see whether it gets better on its own — with maggot wounds and road injuries, a day matters enormously.

Reporting an emergency

What to tell us, and what to do meanwhile

Send us these four things

  1. A photo or short video — it tells us in two seconds what a paragraph cannot.
  2. The exact location — drop a WhatsApp live location pin if you can, or name the nearest landmark.
  3. Your phone number, so we can call you when we are close.
  4. Whether the animal can move, and whether it is on a road.

While you wait

  • Stay at a distance where the animal is not frightened. A scared dog bites.
  • If it is on a busy road and you can do so safely, stand where traffic can see it.
  • Offer water in a bowl or a bottle cap. Do not force water into the mouth of an unconscious animal.
  • Do not move a dog with a suspected spinal or leg injury unless it is in immediate danger.
  • Do not pour oil, turmeric, kerosene or phenyl on a wound. It makes treatment harder.
  • Do not try to give human painkillers. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are toxic to dogs.

The same number as the UPI ID. It is Srinivas's own phone — if it rings out he is probably holding a dog. Try WhatsApp.

Other places to call

We are one small society. These are the official routes, and you are entitled to use them.

Khammam Municipal Corporation

The local authority carries the legal duty under the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2023 to run the sterilisation and vaccination programme, operate the ABC centre, and respond to complaints. The Supreme Court's order of 22 August 2025 required every municipal authority to publish a dedicated helpline number for reporting violations — ask for it.

If you have been bitten

Wash the wound with soap under running water for 15 minutes and go to a doctor the same day. Anti-rabies vaccine is free at government health facilities. Since November 2025, every government and private hospital has been under a Supreme Court direction to keep anti-rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin in stock at all times. Full guidance here →

Witnessing cruelty

Killing, poisoning or maiming an animal is an offence under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 — punishable with imprisonment up to five years. It is cognizable. You can file an FIR at any police station. Photograph and video what you can, safely, and tell us as well.

Animal Welfare Board of India

The statutory body under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Complaints about ABC programmes, recognised organisations and local authority non-compliance can be raised with the Board at awbi.gov.in.

One last thing

Save the number before you need it

Nobody looks up an animal rescue number calmly. They look for it while standing over an injured dog on a road.
